Emilie Lemay grew up in the picturesque village of Knowlton on the shore of Brome Lake, in Quebec’s Eastern Townships. She developed a passion for drawing in the idyllic landscapes of her hometown, then moved to Montreal in 1996 to pursue Fine Arts studies at Cegep du Vieux Montréal and at Concordia University. She focused on drawing, painting and art history while working as an administrative assistant in a contemporary theatre centre and in an art gallery.

She then moved to Winnipeg in 2002, where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honors from the University of Manitoba in 2005 while working for the Official Language Ministry in french immersion schools. She became a professional artist in 2005, a school program facilitator at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in 2006 and director of education and exhibits at the Manitoba Children’s Museum in 2007. She practiced plein air painting in an artist residency at Sunbury Shores Art and Nature Centre in St. Andrews by-the-Sea, New Brunswick, before becoming a mother in 2009. She joined the artist mothers group at Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art who refuse to choose between art making and motherhood.

Emilie’s work is presented in solo and collective exhibitions, fundraisers and live painting events. Her art belongs to public and private collections across Canada, received prizes, public funding and was chosen for juried exhibitions. In her community, she volunteers for the Franco-Manitoban Cultural Centre, Festival du Voyageur, Folklorama’s French Canadian pavilion, Nourri-Source Manitoba (Pluri-Elles) and in the Winnipeg School Division 1. She is a member of La Maison des Artistes Visuels Francophones, of Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art, of the Cloud Appreciation Society and she finds inspiration under the extraordinary sky of the Canadian prairies.
